2. Overview
LinkShell is a bookmarking and link organization app available for iOS, macOS, and iPadOS. The app allows users to save and organize links either:
- locally and privately using Apple’s CloudKit (iCloud); or
- through their own self-hosted Linkding server.
We designed LinkShell so that your data belongs entirely to you. The app does not collect or transmit personal information to the developer or to any third-party services.
3. Data We Do Not Collect
LinkShell does not:
- collect, share, or sell personal information;
- track user behavior or analytics;
- store or access user data on external servers;
- request access to contacts, camera, or location services.
All data management occurs locally on your device or through Apple’s secure services (CloudKit and StoreKit).
4. Data Storage and Processing
CloudKit (Apple iCloud)
- Your data is stored in your personal iCloud account managed by Apple Inc..
- Data is encrypted and protected according to Apple’s iCloud Terms and Privacy Policy.
- The developer cannot view, access, or export this data.
Under GDPR, Apple acts as the data processor for iCloud storage, while you are the data controller of your own information.
Linkding Server (Optional)
- Your login credentials and data remain stored locally on your device.
- The app communicates directly with your chosen server; no data passes through the developer’s systems.
- You are responsible for managing and securing your self-hosted Linkding instance.
StoreKit 2 (Apple App Store Purchases)
- All in-app purchases and subscriptions are handled by Apple via StoreKit 2.
- The developer does not receive or store any payment details, billing addresses, or Apple ID information.
- You can manage or cancel subscriptions via your Apple ID settings.
See Apple’s Media Services Terms and Conditions for details.
5. Third-Party Libraries
LinkShell uses a small number of open-source Swift packages to enhance functionality:
| Library | Purpose | Personal Data Collected |
|---|---|---|
| SwiftSoup | Parses website metadata and titles when saving links. | None |
| Nuke / NukeUI | Loads and caches preview images. | None |
| MarkdownSwift | Renders markdown text in the app. | None |
| CloudKit (Apple) | Cloud data storage for user’s iCloud account. | Managed by Apple |
| StoreKit 2 (Apple) | Handles subscriptions and in-app purchases. | Managed by Apple |
All libraries operate locally or use Apple-managed APIs that do not transmit identifiable user information to the developer.
6. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)
Under the GDPR, our legal bases for processing are:
- Performance of a contract: To provide core app functionality.
- Consent: When you choose to connect an external Linkding server.
- Legitimate interest: To maintain app security and prevent misuse.
No profiling, automated decision-making, or behavioral tracking occurs.
7. Your Rights (GDPR and CCPA)
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:
- Access and obtain a copy of your personal data.
- Request correction or deletion of your data.
- Withdraw consent at any time.
- Lodge a complaint with your data protection authority (e.g., CNIL in France).
Since all data is stored either in your personal CloudKit container (within your iCloud account) or on your own Linkding server, you remain in full control of your data.
To delete your information:
- You can use the app’s built-in tools (for example, the bulk delete feature) to remove your bookmarks and associated data from CloudKit.
- You can also sign out of iCloud or delete your account data by removing the app from your devices.
- If you use a Linkding server, you can manage or delete your data directly from your own Linkding instance.
The developer does not store, host, or have access to any copies of your data.
8. Children’s Privacy
LinkShell is not directed at children under 13 (or under the minimum age in your jurisdiction).
We do not knowingly collect or process personal data from minors. If you believe a minor has provided data through the app, please contact us.
9. Data Security
- All data transmission between your device and iCloud or your Linkding server is secured via HTTPS/TLS.
- Local data is stored using Apple’s secure sandboxed storage.
- The developer does not maintain any central database or user log files.
10. International Users
The app is available globally, but data storage and processing occur through Apple’s iCloud infrastructure located in accordance with Apple’s policies.
If you are an EU resident, your data may be processed outside the EU by Apple under GDPR-compliant mechanisms (e.g., Standard Contractual Clauses).
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The latest version will always be available within the app or on our official website.
